Contractor Roundtable Recap
On November 18th, MCANY hosted a highly engaging Contractor Roundtable at Sarabeth’s, bringing together industry leaders for timely insights on policy, technology, and the future of mechanical construction.
Government Affairs Update: Danna DeBlasio of CMW Strategies opened the program with an overview of recent New York City election results, including a clear breakdown of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s transition team and what contractors may expect as policy priorities take shape under his new administration.
Brian Hughes Honored: Brian Hughes of Hughes Environmental Engineering provided an overview of current industry conditions informed by his year serving as MCAA President. Brian highlighted the record UA membership growth at the national level, the UA/MCAA commitment to mental health awareness, the surge in data center–driven construction, and why New York should remain resilient despite missing out on certain national trends.
MCANY President Michael Russo presented Brian with MCANY’s honorary glass apple, a tradition reserved for those who have made meaningful contributions to our community.
Practical Applications of AI for Contractors: Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA)’s Executive Director of Innovative Technologies, Sean McGuire, delivered a concise and informative session on the practical, real-world applications of artificial intelligence in construction. He highlighted how contractors can use AI for email and meeting summaries, communications, research support, and quick image or video creation.
He also emphasized the importance of basic AI data practices: what information is appropriate to share, establishing simple guidelines for staff, and exploring purposeful tools. Sean’s message was clear: AI is a practical productivity tool that contractors can benefit from right now, but guidance and policy need to be in place. Lastly, attendees were encouraged to consider sending someone to the 2026 MEP Innovation Conference.
