MSCA National Chairman Kip Bagley Visits New York

MSCA Board of Managers and VP of Service at MESA Energy/EMCOR, based in Irvine, CA. Kip and his wife Trish were on hand to join our Service Contractors aboard North River Lobster Co. as we took a short trip up and down the Hudson River. The event brought our MSCA of NY contractors together for the first time in 2019, and it provided a great opportunity for members to network and catch up before entering a busy summer.

Members Head to Citi Field for May Event

Though the Reds ultimately put up the game’s lone run in the 9th inning, members still enjoyed the chance to mix and network with contractors and associate members throughout the evening.

MCA New York held its first membership meeting of the new year on January 22nd and was pleased to be joined by Patrick Dolan, President of Local 638, and Scott Roche, the Business Agent-at-Large. Timothy Bowe, MCA President and President of ABCO Peerless Sprinkler Corp., began the evening with a moment of silence to recognize the passing of Marvin Kalisch of Kalisch-Jarcho. Mr. Kalisch remained once of the most active members in the MCA, and through his knowledge and kindness became a pillar in the industry.

Pat Dolan thanked the contractors and MCA for their partnership with the union and looks forward to labor and management continuing to work to solve problems together. President Dolan also mentioned that the MCA and Local 638 continue to use the recently extended Residential Agreements to take back work from non-union contractors. Contractors were encouraged to try and use these supplements when possible.

Scott Roche, recently elected as Business Agent-at-Large, stated that he is looking forward trying to advance the union mechanical industry in his new role. Through consistent and open communication, Mr. Roche is hoping contractors are comfortable seeing Local 638 as a resource and ally for getting more work.

MCAA President Michael Brandt Updates Membership

On Tuesday, November 27th, MCA New York gathered for a membership meeting at the LaGuardia Marriott. After some time to network and gather, members were able to hear from a couple of special guests in attendance.

Timothy Bowe, MCA President and President of ABCO Peerless Sprinkler Corp., welcomed all members before introducing the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. Started by two FDNY members in 1975, the foundation is dedicated to the advancement of burn care, research, prevention, education, and the proper treatment of burns. FDNY Lieutenant Bill Leahy, President of the Foundation, and John Case, the Burn Outreach & Disaster Coordinator, discussed the important work taking place at the organization and the ways in which these donations will help sustain their mission. Since the MCA first began fundraising efforts 18 years ago, our industry has now raised over $780,000 dollars for the burn center foundation!

Following the donation presentation to the Burn Center Foundation, the MCA New York was pleased to welcome Michael Brandt, MCAA President, and President and CEO of Ohio-based Smith & Oby Company, a full-service mechanical and plumbing contracting firm. Mr. Brandt gave members an insight into the many initiatives currently underway at the national office, as well as a preview of all that will be offered at the 2019 MCAA Convention in Arizona.

Following Mr. Brandt’s remarks, MCA Executive Vice President Tony Saporito asked Michael to help in picking this year’s convention raffle winner. Artie Klansky of Ashlar Mechanical was selected as the lucky winner of a five-night trip for two to the MCAA Convention to be held March 3-7, 2019 at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge!

Wrapping up the meeting, Mr. Saporito noted that the MCA looks forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Holiday Luncheon on December 11th!

Eighth Annual Trade Show Sees Record Participation

On Tuesday, October 30th, more than 200 people came together to make this year’s Trade Show another success. A record 38 Associate Members participated and displayed the world-class products and services offered to our industry. The evening allowed for a unique networking opportunity that gave contractors a more in-depth look at the varied associate members available to help improve jobsites and business practices. Unlike our regular membership meetings, admission was not limited to management personnel and contractors were encouraged to include foremen, estimators, project managers, accounting and purchasing staff, and anyone else who could benefit from this event.

The Trade Show also featured over $3,000 in prizes, associate member giveaways and raffles, and a 50/50 to raise funds for the Steamfitting Industry Assistance Program (SIAP). Attendees raised $1,020 through the 50/50, with $510 donated to the SIAP, an organization dedicated to helping Local 638 steamfitters, contractors, and family members find help and counseling when dealing with addiction related difficulties.

Thank you to the many attendees and presenters for making the Eighth Annual Trade Show another successful event!

MCA’s New York Fire Sprinkler Council Recognized During Fire Prevention Week

On Wednesday, October 10th, members of the Mechanical Contractors Association’s New York Fire Sprinkler Council gathered at City Hall to receive a proclamation from New York City Council Member Joseph Borelli.  The proclamation recognized our Association members’ expertise in installing fire sprinkler systems and our industry’s efforts promoting and educating the public regarding the importance of fire protection and prevention.  Following the ceremony, Council member Borelli, Chair of the City Council Fire and Emergency Services Committee, sat down with those in attendance and listened to our concerns and thoughts about what can be done to better protect New York City residents.  The discussion included conversations regarding the retrofit of existing high rise residential buildings with fire sprinklers, the benefits of union labor, and NYCHA housing.

The MCA also held meetings with several other City Council members and their staffs including Council Members Ampry-Samuels, Brannan, Cabrera, Grodenchik, and Maisel.  Our fire sprinkler lobbying day concluded with a lively meeting discussing fire sprinkler protection and New York City Building Code revisions with staff from the City Council Housing and Buildings Committee Chair Robert Cornegy’s office.

Thank you to all of our participants: Timothy Bowe, ABCO Peerless Sprinkler Corp.; Virginia Hanson, Ashlar Mechanical Corp.; Kevin Gillen, Current Fire Protection, Inc.; Laura Israel, First Women’s Fire Systems Corp.; and Tom Mitchell, Sirina Fire Protection Corp.

If you would like to become involved in our effort to promote fire sprinklers as the best, most effective way to protect lives and property from the ravages of fire, please contact the MCA office at (212) 481-1490.
