Eighth Annual Trade Show Sees Record Participation

On Tuesday, October 30th, more than 200 people came together to make this year’s Trade Show another success. A record 38 Associate Members participated and displayed the world-class products and services offered to our industry. The evening allowed for a unique networking opportunity that gave contractors a more in-depth look at the varied associate members available to help improve jobsites and business practices. Unlike our regular membership meetings, admission was not limited to management personnel and contractors were encouraged to include foremen, estimators, project managers, accounting and purchasing staff, and anyone else who could benefit from this event.

The Trade Show also featured over $3,000 in prizes, associate member giveaways and raffles, and a 50/50 to raise funds for the Steamfitting Industry Assistance Program (SIAP). Attendees raised $1,020 through the 50/50, with $510 donated to the SIAP, an organization dedicated to helping Local 638 steamfitters, contractors, and family members find help and counseling when dealing with addiction related difficulties.

Thank you to the many attendees and presenters for making the Eighth Annual Trade Show another successful event!

MCA’s New York Fire Sprinkler Council Recognized During Fire Prevention Week

On Wednesday, October 10th, members of the Mechanical Contractors Association’s New York Fire Sprinkler Council gathered at City Hall to receive a proclamation from New York City Council Member Joseph Borelli.  The proclamation recognized our Association members’ expertise in installing fire sprinkler systems and our industry’s efforts promoting and educating the public regarding the importance of fire protection and prevention.  Following the ceremony, Council member Borelli, Chair of the City Council Fire and Emergency Services Committee, sat down with those in attendance and listened to our concerns and thoughts about what can be done to better protect New York City residents.  The discussion included conversations regarding the retrofit of existing high rise residential buildings with fire sprinklers, the benefits of union labor, and NYCHA housing.

The MCA also held meetings with several other City Council members and their staffs including Council Members Ampry-Samuels, Brannan, Cabrera, Grodenchik, and Maisel.  Our fire sprinkler lobbying day concluded with a lively meeting discussing fire sprinkler protection and New York City Building Code revisions with staff from the City Council Housing and Buildings Committee Chair Robert Cornegy’s office.

Thank you to all of our participants: Timothy Bowe, ABCO Peerless Sprinkler Corp.; Virginia Hanson, Ashlar Mechanical Corp.; Kevin Gillen, Current Fire Protection, Inc.; Laura Israel, First Women’s Fire Systems Corp.; and Tom Mitchell, Sirina Fire Protection Corp.

If you would like to become involved in our effort to promote fire sprinklers as the best, most effective way to protect lives and property from the ravages of fire, please contact the MCA office at (212) 481-1490.

MCA Members Gather at Queens Museum

MCA of New York members met on Tuesday, September 25th, coming together for the first membership meeting since breaking for summer.  Throughout the evening, members were able to enjoy a guided tour of the famed Panorama of the City of New York, the centerpiece of the Queens Museum collection. Constructed for the 1964 World’s Fair, the Panorama provides a unique view of all 320 square miles of New York City, including the roughly 900,000 buildings constructed at the time.

Once seated, members were updated on the latest issues impacting our industry, including city and state sexual harassment legislation and NYC Local Law 196, which addresses construction safety. The association continues to actively monitor the regulations that accompany these pieces of legislation, and information will be provided to help all members remain compliant.

The MCA is looking forward to seeing everyone on October 30th at the LaGuardia Marriott for our Eighth Annual Associate Member Trade Show!
